Advanced Mobile Strategies and Integrated Sensors

Last week I watched a presentation recorded at GigaOm Structure:Data conference featuring Gus Hunt, CTO of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).  In his presentation, he identified SMAC (social, mobile, big data analytics, and cloud) as the culprit for the massive increase in available data in the world.  He explained that the average smartphone generates huge quantities of data from the following embedded sensors: proximity sensors 3-axis accelerometer sensors touch sensors image sensors microphone sensors light sensors GPS (geo-location) sensors You can imagine, with the billions of phones around the world, how much additional data is produced each day!  Now add the mass volumes coming out of social media! Hunt went on to say there is a time-value-of-data.  This is an important concept for us to understand.  The value of data is worth more this second, than it is w... (more)

More Background On: Software AG Government Solutions Delivers Award Winning Technology to Humanitarian Relief Effort Challenge

By Bob Gourley We previously wrote about some of the significant demonstrations of real world utility of SoftwareAG/Terracotta based solutions, including this piece titled “Plugfest at AFCEA West: Terracotta Wins First Place.” In it we wrote: Government technologists have always been under pressure to make engineering choices that are efficient and effective. They must support demanding missions under resource constraints and this is one of the reason government technologists like seeing proof that something works before investing in it. Demonstrations, prototypes and proof of concepts are important in the federal space. One of the more interesting demonstration environments is the AFCEA “PlugFest” that occurred at the AFCEA West conference in January 2013.  This is a live, unscripted demo where teams of technologists compete and demonstrate their ability to suppo... Insights from the 4 April 2013 Government Big Data Forum: Part Two

On 4 April 2013, Carahsoft sponsored the Third Annual Government Big Data Forum. This post is the second in a series that seeks to capture key elements of the forum and keep the dialog going.  This post captures a high level summary of our three keynote presentations. Kirit Amin kicked off the morning with great context on where we have been and a bit on where we are going and some sage thoughts on what gaps are and ways to address them. As a metaphor he introduced an analogy of “Big Data Yodas,” a program that could accelerate the maximization of smart data use across the government. He also underscored the need for better training for our workers, so that they know both the right ways to do things and the wrong. Kirit likes to consider policies, directives, legislation and more into the “processes” category, these are all important elements. Moving these requirem... (more)
