[video] #BigData-Driven #DevOps at @DevOpsSummit | #IoT #SDN #Hadoop

DevOps is being widely accepted (if not fully adopted) as essential in enterprise IT. But as Enterprise DevOps gains maturity, expands scope, and increases velocity, the need for data-driven decisions across teams becomes more acute. DevOps teams in any modern business must wrangle the ‘digital exhaust' from the delivery toolchain, "pervasive" and "cognitive" computing, APIs and services, mobile devices and applications, the Internet of Things, and now even blockchain. In this power panel [email protected] 19th Cloud Expo, moderated by DevOps Conference Chair Andi Mann, Gordon Haff, senior cloud strategy marketing and evangelism manager at Red Hat; Dave Bilbrough, product evangelist for the Adobe Marketing Cloud; and Paul Peissner, Customer Success Specialist at CollabNet, explored this emerging use of Big Data generated by the digital business to complete the Dev... Data Unification at Scale | @CloudExpo #BigData #DataLake #AI #Analytics

This term Data Unification is new in the Big Data lexicon, pushed by varieties of companies such as Talend, 1010Data, and TamR. Data unification deals with the domain known as ETL (Extraction, Transformation, Loading), initiated during the 1990s when Data Warehousing was gaining relevance. ETL refers to the process of extracting data from inside or outside sources (multiple applications typically developed and supported by different vendors or hosted on separate hardware), transform it to fit operational needs (based on business rules), and load it into end target databases, more specifically, an operational data store, data mart, or a data warehouse. These are read-only databases for analytics. Initially the analytics was mostly retroactive (e.g. how many shoppers between age 25-35 bought this item between May and July?). This was like driving a car looking at the ... (more)

Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Download Slide Deck: ▸ Here Building the Future of Monitoring with Artificial Intelligence Today we can collect lots and lots of performance data. We build beautiful dashboards and even have fancy query languages to access and transform the data. Still performance data is a secret language only a couple of people understand. The more business becomes digital the more stakeholders are interested in this data including how it relates to business. Some of these people have never used a monitoring tool before. They have a question on their mind like "How is my application doing" but no idea how to get a proper answer. Can Self-Driving Cars Ever Really Be Safe? | @ThingsExpo #AI #IoT #M2M #Sensors

Analysts estimate that by 2030, self-driving cars and trucks (autonomous vehicles) could account for as much as 60 percent of US auto sales. That’s great! But autonomous vehicles are basically computers on wheels, and computers crash all the time. Besides that, computers get hacked every day. So you gotta ask, “Can self-driving cars ever really be safe?” The Short Answer No. Self-driving cars can never really be safe. They will be safer! So much safer that it’s worth a few minutes to understand why. Humans Are Very Dangerous First and foremost, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 90 percent of all traffic accidents can be blamed on human error. Next, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, nearly 80 percent of drivers expressed significant anger, aggression, or road rage behind the wheel at least once in the past year. ... Identifying Where and How to Start the Big Data Journey | @BigDataExpo #BigData #DataLake #Analytics

Decisions Exercise: Identifying Where and How to Start the Big Data Journey The recent deluge of rains in Northern California have flooded streets, brought down trees and plugged storm sewers.  As I was trying to make my way around the neighborhood, I thought of a classroom exercise to help my MBA students to identify the use cases upon which they could focus data and analytics.  In this exercise, I’m going to ask my students to pretend that they have been hired by the city to “Optimize Street Maintenance” after these rainstorms. In particular, the students need to address the following questions: Where and how do you start to address this initiative? What data might you need to support this initiative? These are classic questions that I hear all the time when I meet with clients about their big data journeys.  Let’s walk through how I’ll teach my students to addres... (more)

Cloud Deployment: Slow and Thoughtful Wins the Race | @CloudExpo #Cloud #APM #Monitoring

Cloud Deployment: Slow and Thoughtful Wins the Race By Christine Cignoli This recent research on cloud computing from the Register delves a little deeper than many of the "We're all adopting cloud!" surveys we've seen. They found that meaningful cloud adoption and the idea of the cloud-first enterprise are still not reality for many businesses. The Register's stats also show a more gradual cloud deployment trend over the past five years, not any sort of explosion. One important takeaway is that coherence across internal and external clouds is essential for IT right now. That translates into tasks like planning better cloud management and application and platform integrations. Here's an in-depth look from PacketPushers at the decisions and process that go into big IT projects like lifecycle refreshes and cloud moves. There are some excellent tips on avoiding common i...
